Do you have shared memory connections?
If so, does the shared memory connection suffer from the same problem.
If not, you might configure shared memory connections and see
if it experiences the same problem.
This type of information would let you establish if their is a problem related
to the listener, or a problem related to the engine. I do not know
what the symptoms of trying to connect to a connection which
has reached its limit, and dont have a test box currently. You might
look at NETTYPE and see how many listeners you are expecting
to connect.
Is the box pegged?
Do your logs show anything interesting? (Long checkpoint ...)
You might post what was in your log from an hour before the lockup
all the way to the lockup.
Just some guesses.
