In general case it isn't necessary to shutdown the server.
By example you can SET LOCK MODE TO WAIT in other sessions
that are needing this table.
You can catch the moment when this table isn't used and run
CREATE INDEX (itsets exclusive lock on the table).

/home/informix:$finderr -564
-564 Cannot sort rows.
This internal error reflects an unexpected condition during a sort.
Check the accompanying ISAM error code for more information. If the
error recurs, please note all circumstances and contact Informix
Technical Support.
2. Related ISAM error
/home/informix:$infxmsg 5
I/O error
3. What does it mean together? I don't know exactly. I think that reasons are
different in different cases.
