Creating chunk files?
Posted in 2004

i'm all confused after reading the guides.. and
after trying, i still couldnt get it right..
1. how do i change the default size of rootsdbs file? without adding another
chunk file? I've tried changing the onconfig file, but upon restarting its
still the old size.
2. And if i do a "onspaces -a abcdb \\\\\\\\.\\\\d:\\\\db\\\\abcdb_dat.000 -s 550000 -o 0"
and when i do a "onstat -d", i see 2 chunk files and the abcdb_dat.000 size
changes to 550000KB but how do i add physical chunk files instead? Meaning if
i add a chunk file, it actually creates another abcdb_dat.001 file?
3. if i create "DBSPACETEMP tempdbs " in my onconfig file, does it mean i have
to physically create the dbspace tempdbs using ONSPACES ?
Thanks!
Michael
Hi
bro,
1) I'm affraid you cannot change ROOTDBS size on the fly (or even worse,
without regenerating the instance). those are some of most basic steps
- export your data
- change rootdbs on onconfig file
- onmode -ky ; oninit -i :-)
- import your data
2) Not at all (altough what you ask is not clear)
Physical chunk??? there is no such... chunks are just chunks (another layer in
the DB) If the chunk already exists, onspaces complains. Also, onspaces will
NOT auto-rename your chunks.
3) you ALWAYS MUST create temporary dbspace(s). ALWAYS. After that, set the
variable to that temp dbs (although i think its not necessary...)
Greetz
On IDS version 9.3 you can add additional
chunks to the rootdbs. I am not sure about the Informix 7 versions. Here is an
example :
$ onspaces -a rootdbs -p /dev/i/0/vol01 -o 500000 -s 100000Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
Chunk successfully added.
$ onstat -
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.30.FC7 -- On-Line -- Up 14 days 08:54:13
-- 1234944 Kbytes
Hope this helps.

You can always add chunks to the rootdbs, regardless of version.

Hi there buddies Mark and Ravi (and everyone else out there) I know you can add chunks to ROOTDBS What I wrote is in regard to growing the size of the rootdbs chunk itself. Example: If rootdbs chunk /dev/rraw_rootdbs has a size of 64 MB and ROOTDBS on it has same size, you could grow the raw device to whatever size you want, but Informix will still take up only the original 64 MB, even modifying ROOTSIZE value, unless we proceed as stated in previous post. hope it's clear now. thanks for the advice anyways
