Maybe glibc (libc6) was updated in meantime and you got a non i686 or non
tls version. On Debian 3.1 you can check like following:
$ ldd $INFORMIXDIR/oninit
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x40026000)
