IDS 11.5 and Physical Log Manipulation

Hi All
Can someone clarify for me please.
I have an IDS11.5 engine running on Solaris and have hit a performance
issue. I
have narrowed it down to the size of the physical log, at certain times it
is getting
filled very quickly and initiating checkpoints (every 30 seconds) these are
also too
long but that is another issue.
I've tried to change the size of the physlog by editing the onconfig file
and
bouncing the engine, but , although the online log seems to indicate this
was
successful, onstat -l, onstat -g ckp and the checkpoint intervals clearly
indicate
this is not so (I also tried to increase the physlog buffer size and loglog
buffer size
but these do not seem to have taken effect). I also have doubts about where
the
physlog is located (which dbspace).
What is the correct way to relocate, resize and change the buffer size for
the
physical log on an 11.5 engine, and can it be done with impunity with the
engine
running or does it require a bounce ?
Many Thanks
Keith

Keith,
Take a look at the onparams command.

Hi Keith,
*A)* To find out where you physical log is, you can either:
1. run onstat -l
*Physical Logging
Buffer bufused bufsize numpages numwrits pages/io
P-2 2 32 3384 200 16.92
phybegin physize phypos phyused %used
1:263 12288 5020 2 0.02 *
The "1" in red indicates where the physical log is (which chunk).
Then locate the chunk number using onstat -d to find the dbspace that
the chunk belongs to.
or
2. run oncheck -pe > junk
vi junk and search for the physical log and in which dbspace it is in .
*B)* To increase the physical log and or move it from one dbspace to
another, you need to use the "onparams" command
It could be done online on 11.50.
*onparams -p -s <size> [-d <DBspace>]*

Hi Keith,
To resize and relocate the physical log use:
onparams -p -s <size> -d <DBspace>
You can do that with the engine up.
You can find which dbspace the physical log is currently in by running onstat
-l. The number before the colon under phybegin is the dbspace number, so you
match that up against the output of onstat -d.
To change the buffer size you will have to change the onconfig and bounce the
engine.
Regards,
Stuart

Thanks all, I now understand the process, however I'm still not sure about
the buffer size change. I have already changed the ONCONFIG, bounced
the engine, seen the parameter changed in the log but am still seeing the
old size in onstat -l.
No forget I spoke, onstat -l reports in pages and the size is set in Kb, I
have
a 2k page size and merely doubled the buffer so getting the same integer
in onstat -l that I previously had in the ONCONFIG.
Thanks all again
Keith
