Flame on! (Not at you, Dave, at Informix) I gather from your wording ("has always been") that this is an old problem. In that case, why hasn't it been fixed??? I feel the urge to flame Informix for not being a tad more responsive if this is the case --given-- that they charge a hellacious amount for these tools. For the current project I'm working on, the final hardware is going to cost, oh, maybe $100k, but to get Informix we have to pay like $200k. I mean, geez, it's like $76k for just a 4gl compiler license! For that kind of money, I'm sorry, but I expect absolute top quality stuff! Not to mention snappy and useful support! (So far I've "only" found two bugs in 4gl, of which I reported one. When done I was left with essentially "well, thanks for telling us, we'll see if we can ever get around to fixing it". This is what we get for the many thousands of dollars support we pay a year? No ftp'able patches? No hints as to when problems will be fixed? I mean, the amount of $upport my client will be paying [after development, when we set up the production machine], will be like enough to cover one person's whole salary! And the best we get is "thanks, bye"? Or "sorry I can't talk longer I have more customers to help"?) I ran into lack of string storage recently too, and had to hack around it. Frankly I'm very disappointed in 4gl, but that'll be the subject of another message. I have a looooong wish list to type in. (Preview: For all the hype around 4gl I'm incredulous it doesn't have most of the features built in (eons ago) that keep recurring in the group (e.g., highlighting in display array; displaying a list of an unknown number of elements... I've got pages of ideas). To be quite honest, I find 4gl pretty pathetic. My desire is also for something that is easy to maintain when I'm done. Any language where the common solution to a problem is to replicate code... shudder. Note that my main reason for flaming is, shall we say, price/features. I'm beginning to regret having agreed to use Informix for this project. -- Andrew Burt aburt@du.edu "But if he was dying he wouldn't bother to carve "Aaaaargh", he'd just say it."
