Check list to Add a new instance
Posted in 2016

Hi,
I have a suse-linux and
Ids 1170fc8 environment. I have 2 Instances and I like to add another one.
My question is, what do I need to do ?
I think, I have to do the next things:
- create another onconfig file with the name of the new server and alias.
- define the new service port in /etc/services.
- add the new server in sqlhost file.
- define a directory to put the dbspace files.
- execute an oninit -i.
What else do I need to do ?
Thanks in advance.
A few things come to mind, which you may have already thought of:
- Create a chunk for your root dbspace
- Modify the new onconfig file to reference the new chunk and different
informix log file/console file (and check to make sure you're not
overwriting anything referenced by the other instances)
- Modify the new onconfig and put in a different DBSERVERNUM
- Modify the profile, or script you use to give you an option to set the
environment for the new instance
- Make sure that you review your backups so that they will be kept separate
- Make sure that you have the correct environment variables set when you
initialize the instance

Just two more things:
1. set SERVERNUM to a unique number (at least unique on that machine).
2. Set ROOTPATH to a unique file
3. Create the ROOTPATH file
4. Optionally set the TBLTBLFIRST and TBLTBLNEXT parameters in the
ONCONFIG file to set the extent sizing for the tablespace tablespace
(partition header page table) in the root dbspace (since you will not be
running onspaces to create this. The defaults hold information for about
500 entities, so if you expect the root dbspace to have to hold more than
that you should set these appropriately. (Ideally the root dbspace only
holds the system databases sysmaster and sysutils - even sysadmin should be
moved out after initialization in a perfect world.)

I prefer to change the name/path of the online.log (and online.con, although
there's not much there) file so
as to have a unique online.log for each instance.

Good point John! Same for the CONSOLE log unless you are directing it to
/dev/null or /dev/console.
