Logical logs - how to tell if full?

I know 'onstat -l' can be used - but what am I looking for to tell me that the
logical logs are full?
Also if I want to archive them do I need to bring informix into quiescent mode
or can it be online?

There are usually some clues, such as the phone ringing incessantly because
all update activity on the database server is suspended, and a message in
the online log to the effect that the logs are full.
We use a sed script wrapped around onstat -l at one site in order to trigger
log backups only when they a (parameterised) percentage full: in this way we
keep conention om a tape device shared between multiple servers to a
manageable level. You could adapt this to display the percentage full if
you wish.

One of the fundamental principles of Informix (and other DBMSs such as
Oracle and DB2) is that the transaction logs may be backed up without
service interruption. So no, you may back them up with the server still
online.
select * from syslogs will give you info about which logs are used andwhich are available, one row per logical log record.
you could write some calculaton based on the info in there.
You should understand what logs are available for use and which ones
aren't!
This information, and information about if you need the engine in
quiescent, is covered in the IDS System Administrators course.
If you haven't been on this course, I wouldn't recommend you do
anything fancy, and that you let log_full.sh do the backups for you or
run ontape -c
The course will also explain the impact of Long Transactions on your
logical logs.
