36 gig array as 1 raw device.

Folks, I'm hoping someone can shed some light here. It is my understanding that Dynamic Server 7.3 can only "see" 2 gig chunks and no bigger. My Var has configured an array of 36 gig, (2 18 gig drives) as one raw device on SCO 5.0.5 through a Mylex controller. Now if I calculate the pages ...Can I use this one raw device for the entire database and put in the offsets for what would amount to roughly 18 2 gig chunks?? If so what would some pitfalls be if any? Brian London J.M. Rodgers Co., Inc Duty Drawback Specialists 245 Woodport Rd Sparta, NJ 07871 (973) 729-6700 x114
First of all, sad to hear you're using SCO but that's another thread... :-) You will have to configure your 36 GB into 18 2GB drives. What you are suggesting is not possible, don't blame Informix, it's a limitation of the 32-bit operating system you and most of us use. After you configure your system into 2 GB raw devices set aside something like this: DISK QTY Description 1 rootdbs 1 logsdbs 1 physdbs ( note: don't create a 2GB physdbs after install, just use this disk for it. ) 3 tempdbs01, tempdbs02, tempdbs03 The rest for data. 1 datadbs01 1 datadbs02 1 datadbs03 1 indexdbs01 1 indexdbs02 1 indexdbs03 ... Create a /opt/informix/symlinks directory and create symbolic links to your /dev/devices that are your raw disks. cd /opt/informix/symlinks ln -s /dev/rdisk01 rootdbs Have fun, you're now a DBA... :-) Tim Brian London wrote: > > Folks, > > I'm hoping someone can shed some light here. > It is my understanding that Dynamic Server 7.3 can only "see" 2 gig chunks and no bigger. > My Var has configured an array of 36 gig, (2 18 gig drives) as one raw device on SCO 5.0.5 > through a Mylex controller. > > Now if I calculate the pages ...Can I use this one raw device for the entire database and > put in the offsets for what would amount to roughly 18 2 gig chunks?? SCO's UnixWare 7.1.x can have a file system size of up to 185GB (more if you have Veritas) and a file size as large as 2GB but large file support can be enabled as well. This means that a raw device can be at least 185 GBs large. However, not all UnixWare commands can work with large files. Who to blame is hard to tell. Use fdisk and break the drive down into 3 partitions. That will allow for 21 chunks per drive. Gary Quiring
