Which interbase?

Hello everybody. I am evaluating databases so I can upsize my Access apllication. I still plan to use Access as a front end but move my data to a database server and slowly port functionality to stored procedures. Access will most likely remain as the main data entry/reporting tool. I am wondering if SE is "good enough" or if I need 2K. Right now about 25 users are on the system but this will keep growing. I also have almost a gig of data (scattered across different access files) that will be consolidated is there a upper limit as to how big a SE database can be? The database will be tied to the web using php or Cold Fusion. Here are some concerns that I have. Access collation is done case insensitively (where clauses, order bys etc.) so far the only other databases I have found that do case insensitive collation are sybase (optional) and MS-SQL server (no choice). Is it possible for informix to do case insensitive collation? Access has long object name support does both IX dbs support 128 chars? Are the ODBC drivers good? Is there an upsizing tool to assist me in this endevour? As you may be able to tell I am trying to avoid upsizing to ms-sql server which is the most natural path. Having worked with it for a little while I am convinced it's only purpose is to crash my windows 98 client as many times as possible. One more thing.. I could not find any pricing information on the IX website any clues as to how much this will cost me?

Total database size is essentially unlimited if you don't mind building it out of 2^31 tables. As for which... 25 users is not a lot for SE, even 100 isn't if the hardware and OS can handle it. Over 100 users you are likely better off with IDS.2000. Also know that SE does not support variable length data types (VARCHAR, TEXT, DATA, CLOBS) or user defined types, user defined functions, user defined indexing, datablades, etc. > Here are some concerns that I have. > Access collation is done case insensitively (where clauses, order bys > etc.) so far the only other databases I have found that do case > insensitive collation are sybase (optional) and MS-SQL server (no > choice). Is it possible for informix to do case insensitive collation? In IDS.2000 you can code the sort yourself to collate anyway you want. Just create a new sort type or a new index type which indexes case-mapped and force queries that need it to use that index. > Access has long object name support does both IX dbs support 128 chars? SE, IDS 7.xx - 18chars IDS.2000 - 128 chars > Are the ODBC drivers good? Decent and all third party ODBC driver vendors support Informix.' > Is there an upsizing tool to assist me in this endevour? ?? > As you may be able to tell I am trying to avoid upsizing to ms-sql > server which is the most natural path.
