UW7, Informix 9.20, and 10 GB dbspace
Posted in 2000
Poster wanted a 10 GB dbspace on UnixWare 7 with Informix 9.20, where UW7 allows huge slices but Informix chunks are capped at 2 GB. He asked whether he could carve one big raw device into five chunks using onspaces offsets (0, 2 GB, 4 GB...). The answer given was no: Informix requires offset + size to stay under 2 GB, so the device must be split into 2 GB slices (or managed via an LVM), with chunks pointed at symbolic links rather than raw device names. A poster on OpenServer confirmed doing this with fdisk/divvy; UW7 has no divvy, so the original poster planned to edit the VTOC. No documentation reference for the offset limit was produced.

Since UW7 does not have a 2GB slice limitation as in UW2, I wonder how elase I can create a 10GB dbspace in UW7 ? I have to create 5 UW's slices of 2GB each and then assign a chunk to each of the slices as in UW2 or there is a better way ? Thanks, Thanh Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

I don't understand your question. If you're trying to create a 10Gb (or larger) slice on a UnixWare 7 hard drive, there shouldn't be a problem. I know I can create a single slice of 10GB or more (in UW7) and I know
there is a limit of 2GB chunk size (in pre-9.30). My question is can
I use an offset to do that ? ie.
onspaces -c -d mydbs ... -o 0 -s 2000000 ... -p /TenGigs
onspaces -a mydbs ... -o 2000000 -s 2000000 ... -p /TenGigs
onspaces -a mydbs ... -o 4000000 -s 2000000 ... -p /TenGigs
onspaces -a mydbs ... -o 6000000 -s 2000000 ... -p /TenGigs
onspaces -a mydbs ... -o 8000000 -s 2000000 ... -p /TenGigs
I just don't have a disk yet to try out.
As the onspaces manual does not say it, I guess my question should be
is there a limit for '-o offset' besides being an unsigned integer ?

You won't be able to do it that way - Informix dictates that maximum
value of offset + size must be less than 2Gb.
Either partition your disk into 5 x 2Gb slices using format (or the
Unixware equivalent) or use an LVM to do it for you.
Remember of course to use softlinks to point to the device for the
chunk path, saves many headaches in the future
(ie ln -s /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s3 chunk1 then use link as path)
Hope this helps

Where can I find this information ? I searched Admin Guide/Reference
but could not find it. All it says is 'size' must not exceed 2GB.

Hi!
I have Openserver (not UW7) and I learned this the hard way - from the chunk
creation screen. I used fdisk to create partition up to 14 GB and divvy to
split
it into 2 GB slices. Then created chunks matching the divvy slices. Divvy
had
limitation of 7 slices max, that's why the partition was only up to 14 GB.

I don't know if you have these utilities on UW7, but try to find equivalent.

No. UW7 has no divvy. But I know how to manipulate the vtoc well.
