Hello everybody I want to update several programs from esql 4.1 to esql 7.3 reversely from Informix SE 5.0 to Informix Dynamic Server 7.3 . My Question to you is if there are some traps or difficults to do so. Thanks for every answer Bye Toto

No everything should port directly with no changes. Later you can recode to take advantage of 7.xx ESQL features like multiple connections and multi-threading. If you have not already upgraded the database server I'd suggest porting the apps first and running the 7.3x apps against the 5.xx server, using a 7.3x runtime environment and a network connection, until everything is ported and tested in production against the 5.xx engine. The recompiled apps will run a bit faster than the original 5.xx compiled versions and MUCH faster than running the 5.xx apps against the upgraded 7.3x engine using the relay module. Once the apps are ported, tested, and verified in production you can safely upgrade the engine and be confident that everything will work day one! Art S. Kagel

If you simply want to run the old code against the new database, recompile with ESQL/C 7.3 (well, actually, CSDK 2.2) and off you go. I'm not sure what you mean about the 'reversely from SE 5.0' part of your question, so I may not be answering as you need. There certainly are changes in 7.3 compared with 4.1, but anything that used to work should continue to do so. Unless it was extra- ordinarily contorted or working around a defect or deficiency in 4.1. Most likely, you can simply recompile and run. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>

The size difference is because ESQL now uses shared libraries for all of its own library code so your executables will be smaller but the shared libraries must be present for everything to work. Thats what we were expecting, and thats the problem. My binarys went from 300K to 1.1K Plus. > > Art S.
