shared memory not initialized for INFORMIXSERVER
Posted in 2009
A user on IDS 7.31.UD6 (HP-UX 11.11) couldn't connect with dbaccess (error 25588) and onstat -d reported shared memory not initialized for server 'onlinedev'. Advice was to start the instance with oninit -v as user informix and check online.log/onstat -m. The server then came up, but only sysmaster and sysutils existed — the six application databases were gone. Respondents said this indicates the instance was re-initialized (oninit -i, shown by 'database built successfully' messages in online.log) or the databases were dropped, and the only recovery is a restore from a level 0 archive (ontape -s -L 0); the user's ontape -a logical-log tape is not a level 0. The thread ends without confirming whether a usable level 0 backup existed, so no final outcome is recorded.

Subject: shared memory not initialized for INFORMIXSERVER
Hi,
On our development server (IDS 7.31.UD6 on HPUX B.11.11), when we executed
dbaccess dbname, we got error message "25588: The appl process connot
connect to Dynamic server". When I onstat -d, I got "shared memory no
initialized for INFORMIXSERVER 'onlinedev'".
What should I do?
Thanks in advance.
Wally Tang
To up your informix server database, execute oninit -v command using
Informix user.
If everything r working properly, the last line must be:
Verbose output complete mode=5
If not, you must look the Informix message file. Execute onstat -m to
view your online log.
Good Luck,

Thanks, Alberto. I got to the line "Verbose output complete mode=5", but I
only have the sysmaster@onlinedev and sysutils@onlinedev. I should see six
other databases, how can I bring back the missing databases.
Thanks.

Did you perform by accicdent oninit -i??? If you did that, you
initialized a new instance (without database application). To restore
you application database, you must perform a restore from your last
level 0 backup.
Otherwise, somebody who has sufficient privileges dropped your database
application... and to recover, you also must perform a restore from your

You can look your online.log and find for a message, such as "Database

I hope that you have a valid level 0 backup...

You must look for some evidence, such as "building sysmaster

Wally, are you the DBA that setup this instance? If not, you should be
working with that person to determine what is going on with the
instance.
If you are, then we need to know what you have done to this point
towards building, running, and securing the instance for usage and
recovery.
Thanks,

You must look for some evidence, such as "building sysmaster
database"... If you found that phrase, brow... you're in a bad
situation and prove that somebody created a new instance overwriting
your old instance.
To fix that, only restoring your databases performing a level 0
backup, as I mentioned before.
Look you online.log as I mentioned, and let me know...

Did you perform by accicdent oninit -i??? If you did that, you
initialized a new instance (without database application). To restore
you application database, you must perform a restore from your last
level 0 backup.
Otherwise, somebody who has sufficient privileges dropped your database
application... and to recover, you also must perform a restore from your
last level 0 backup.
You can look your online.log and find for a message, such as "Database
(database_name) dropped".
I hope that you have a valid level 0 backup...

only have the sysmaster@onlinedev and sysutils@onlinedev. I should see
six
other databases, how can I bring back the missing databases.

To up your informix server database, execute oninit -v command using

One of the emails in the thread did show 'oninit -iv' after the attempt to
change port number.
Dear Willy,
Don't use the '-i' option on working systems.
Do use your backup to restore as suggested.
If you don't have a backup, contact IBM Informix Tech Support before you do
any more damage.
