Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Rob Kottler (14.10.FC3IE, non-logging) wanted to know whether a backup is running and when the last one finished, to schedule level 2 backups. Paul Watson said reserved pages update only after success. Andreas Legner suggested querying sysrstcb for non-zero arcbu or looking for arcbackup threads in onstat -g ath, and questioned the need for RTO_SERVER_RESTART. Paul suggested ps for ontape.

Good day
Inadvertent setting of
RTO_SERVER_RESTART and CKPTINTVL caused some grief with checkpoints not being instituted correctly and the system ran for some days, and someone bounced the server, resulting in data loss.
Therefore we have decided to include regular Level 2 backups as well, to write to 'off disk/server' storage.
EDIT:
This is IDS 14.10.FC3IE on a non logging database.
RTO_SERVER_RESTART and CKPTINTVL are now correctly set
:END EDIT
My question is this: Is there a way to query firstly whether a backup is currently in progress, and also when the last Level 0 and Level 1 completed.
onstat -pr will give me this information:Archive Level 0
Real Time Archive Began 09/11/2022 21:45:04
Time Stamp Archive Began 0x87b68c0c
Logical Log Unique Id 612
Logical Log Position 0x527018
Archive Level 1
Real Time Archive Began 09/15/2022 13:30:06
Time Stamp Archive Began 0x89589117
Logical Log Unique Id 617
Logical Log Position 0x14fa018
But it does not tell me if/when it completed. Is there a similar command that can give me that information. I want to put the Level2's into a cronjob that should not start while one of the others is in progress.

AFAIK The reserved pages record should only be updated if the backup was successful

I guess you're talking about AUTO_CKPTS?
You didn't mention version, but I remember that, esp. with non-logging databases (very low volume of logical logs created) it could take hours and days until the next checkpoint - a problem fixed in more recent versions (12.10.xC14, 14.10.xC4), in the way that CKPTINTVL acts as a fallback trigger.
On the other hand, if - we don't know - you're really running a non-logging system, with hardly any logical logging, what's the point in using RTO_SERVER_RESTART in the first place?
As for 'backup completed', I don't think that's of much relevance to you since a backup always would get you the state of when the backup started.
For finding out whether a backup currently is underway, I'm sure someone will have a good answer.
I think querying sysmaster:sysrstcb for entries having a non-zero arcbu value might be a good way. Or you search onstat -g ath for arcbackup threads.
HTH,
Andreas
