Layoffs at Informix

I received a call from my Informix sales rep in D.C. and he told me that he had just been layed off along with a large number of sales and support staff in the Federal Division. This is a result of the split of Informix into 2 units and the reorganization that is going along with it. He also stated that Informix will be moving to a "maintenance only" mode on the database servers soon and is looking for a buyer for the database portion of the business. Does anybody know anything about this? Christopher

The statement released on September 20th indicated that there would be more layoffs, and today is/was the official day for finding out who is being asked to leave. I've not heard of anything happening hear in Menlo Park yet, but I haven't been circulating with intent to pick up on the rumour mill is saying. > He also stated that Informix will be moving to a "maintenance only" mode > on the database servers soon and is looking for a buyer for the database > portion of the business. That does *not* tie in with my understanding of what is going on. There is a lot of active development going on on the main database servers (IDS/Foundation, XPS, RedBrick, Cloudscape). The older product lines are already in maintenance only mode (IDS 7.x, OnLine 5.x, etc), so there's no news there. And I don't think that the database unit (Informix Software, the database company, or OldCo -- as opposed to the as yet unnamed NewCo) is up for sale. Of course, I may just be too low down the hierarchy to know about such things. However, if some company jumps out of the blue with an offer to buy, it would obviously be considered by the board; that is their duty. Whether we'd be sold would depend on the offer. And that has always been true at any time, of any publicly traded company. I don't think that the board is actively seeking a purchaser, but again, who am I to know about such things. > Does anybody know anything about this? In Texas we often add: "Or possibably a smoke bomb...." ;-) In all honesty, why would anyone take as the gospel truth the word of someone that had just been layed off? Let's consider a key fact. The folks in R&D are still working on the 9.3 release. Wouldn't it make more sense to fire those folks if the product is about to cease developement? All I can say is "I'm still here"...
