The last internal benchmark I heard of suggested that a well set up, well cached RAID 5 would perform "competitively" with RAID 10, even on writing (given a potential cost saving). But there was no attempt to investigate the maintenance of integrity, which is what gets Art so steamed. Well, Art gets steamed on write performance, too. :-) Under the circumstances, I am personally *very* reluctant to recommend RAID 5 on any site I'm involved with. Even if performance is good. And especially not for cost reasons...
