Client SDK 2.90 - where is it ?
Posted in 2005
Thread asks why IBM's Client SDK 2.90, announced for 25 Feb 2005, wasn't downloadable from IBM's site. Replies confirmed it was missing for most users: some with Passport Advantage could get it, while others complained PA listed neither CSDK nor IDS 10 and that PA support was slow and unhelpful (much of the thread drifts into griping about PA vs. Informix tech support). Workarounds that worked: obtaining the media from a distributor (OpenPSL), getting it sent by US Informix tech support, and later a pointer to IBM's trial/beta download site, which offered 32-bit AIX, Linux and Windows versions with more platforms promised.

IBM announced that the Client SDK 2.90 would be released on February 25th. It does not seem to be available for download from the IBM web site. Anyone know if this is because it's late or because IBM have decided not to make this release available for free download ? Cheers Richard

I can't find it either so I have asked our distributors, OpenPSL, to make it available to me for download from their servers. They seemed to think they could get it to me in the next day or two. I will let you know if I have any luck. Ben.

If you have a Passport Advantage agreement (which I know you don't or you wouldn't be dependent on Open for media) you'd be able to download it now.

Say, "bad" and "worse"?? We have PA and do not have any SDKs on our customer site. In fact, we also do not have IDS 10.0 available. Upon notification last Fri., IBM said MAYBE they would get it posted for us by next Wed. (They said that they couldn't respond sooner because the person (singular) responsible had already left for the day (Fri.) and no one was available over the weekend. Not only that, but when I went to download the most current previous version (9.4 FC6 for Solaris), that link was broken. But, I guess I shouldn't complain too much: it only cost me an hour and a half on the phone, which is better than other times. We have been struggling with PA for almost 3 years now, and, inspite of the involvement of many (over a dozen) IBM agents, sales reps, contract officers, etc., we still are having unresolved difficulties with PA. I have to say that unacceptable PA service was a significant factor in our decision to migrate to the Big O. DG

I would have thought that there would just be a flag or something and anyone entitled to IDS v9 would just get 10 added automatically. I have access to about 10 different customers' PA sites and although I haven't checked them all, the 2 or 3 I HAVE checked all have v10. >> But, I guess I shouldn't complain too > much: it only cost me an hour and a half on the phone, which is better > than > other times. You are very lucky that you can speak to anyone at all. Here in EMEA, under the flawless reasoning because PA support is based in Ireland and they don't have the requisite language skills to handle non-English calls, they do not provide a phone number to anyone at all! You have to email. And wait .... > We have been struggling with PA for almost 3 years now, and, inspite of > the > involvement of many (over a dozen) IBM agents, sales reps, contract > officers, etc., we still are having unresolved difficulties with PA. > I have to say that unacceptable PA service was a significant factor in our > decision to migrate to the Big O. My experience too is that it has improved a lot recently. However, if THERE is a problem, then no matter how many IBMers get involved and how senior they are, none has any influence to resolve even th most glaring PA problem. If your dissatisfaction is representative, and senior execs at IBM realised the extent of such dissatisfaction, I think things would have to change. But Informix is a comparatively recent migrant to PA, and it may well be that it works very smoothly for other "mainstream" IBM products, and the Informix users perceptions are unrepresentative.

Support is basically the same provided you can play the guessing game correctly. Here's how it works: You have to provide leading questions to the support people so that they don't have to give you the answer or try to work the problem outside of your questions. If you don't ask the right question they can't give you the right answer. This way they can work the problem without any independent thought. You find yourself in many situations talking and muttering to yourself, and after a while you can just hang up the phone because you are really just talking to yourself. Or just pick up the phone from the beginning and pretend to call tech support, it's almost therapeutic--and more effective. The dial tone puts you into a kind of daze...note to self... 8-)

Here in the UK the quality of Tech Support for Informix is still pretty good, but perhaps a little more hit-and-miss than it used to be. (Or is that just nostalgia?) The down-system and other backroom boys are still excellent, but there seem to be more "green" youngsters - some of them girls! - on first-line support than there used to be. This can be a little frustrating as it obviously takes longer to get the answers you need, but on the other hand I guess you've got to bring new people on somehow. Other areas of IBM vary wildly, as you say. Calling the general phone number with an enquiry, particularly an Informix one, is next-to-hopeless. The company is simply too big to be able to handle such calls effectively. The hardware support is generally pretty good too. However, disproportionate amounts of time are spent (in my view as someone with a genuine support contract) in pre-qualifying calls to make sure they are "entitled". There is a saying in English law that "It is better that a hundred guilty men go free than one innocent man is convicted", but no-one told IBM (or Tony Blair): in the IBM world it is better that a hundred genuine people are kept waiting for the support they need than one blagger gets away without paying!

Just to follow up, I have received the CSDK installations for Windows and Linux Intel 32-bit today from OpenPSL. Being with OpenPSL seems bliss compared to some of the PA problems reported. They answer the phone promptly, return phone calls, even if you can't just download what you need. Ben.

When I called the PA number, I had to spend several minutes (literally true) explaining to them that there was a product called IBM/Informix IDS 10 (I used all the names I could think of), that it was an IBM product, that it was covered under our support contract. PA's initial position was that everything was in order because we had access to the 4GL and ISQL packages. It took effort to explain that the DBMS had a separate existence from the tools, and that was what we wanted to download. I just received a new email from PA this morning. They now say that they have determined that we are eligible to download IDS 10, but they will not commit to any particular timeframe to make it available. We are just flabbergasted, angered, frustrated, etc. "It's 'Orrible!" he puns, and throws hands in air. DG
Because of all my moaning and groaning in this thread, I'd like to distinguish between the tech support folks at the U.S. Informix tech support (800-274-8184) from the PA folks. We still generally get good service from them. In fact, they sent me CSDK 2.90, even though still not available from PA. some limited version of this are available from the trial an beta software download site. http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/search.jsp?sr=1&S_TACT=104CBW71&S_CMP=&s=&k=ALL&pid=&q=Informix+C&dt=RELEASED+PRODUCT&cat=&b=&pf=&productname=&sb=rd&x=0&y=0 Currently 32 bit AIX, Linux and Windows. IBM is working to get other products there shortly. Richard Moon wrote: > IBM announced that the Client SDK 2.90 would be released on February > 25th.
