Running Informix on a Pentium based System

We are considering switching from Access to Infomix, and my boss thinks Informix can not be run on a pentium based computer, preferring someting like a SUN box instead. Could I be enlightened here?

Yes you could. Both SE and IIF.2000 (aka Dynamic Server 9.2) run on Linux. Linux runs on more hardware than windows and it's free. (Don't tell your boss it's free, suits usally gets bad vibes and starts thinking about communism when they learn this) It's also more stable and faster, but your boss probably don't care about that. I believe there's other intel-OSes you could use (SCO?), but other will probably tell.. If Informix _did_ care, they'd list supported OS/hardware on their pages -but they obviously don't. (-well I couldn't fint it...) Thomas
You have a typical boss who think he is always right. You have a golden chance to raise a finger at him. Go to his room, stare right in his eyes, get at least five other colleagues in the room and say, "You are wrong" "Jerry Chimutanda" <jerry@compcentre.uz.ac.zw> wrote in message news:8l468h$2ks$1@news.xmission.com... > > We are considering switching from Access to Infomix, and my boss thinks > Informix can not be run on a pentium based computer, preferring someting > like a SUN box instead. > > Could I be enlightened here? > > >

I see lots of responses for Linux on Intel. I run both Linux and NT versions of IDS and Linux only of IF.2000. I have customers who are very pleased with IDS 7.3 on NT. The point is, you are switching from Access. That means that you don't have tremendous loads on your system. Probably any of the Intel solutions mentioned will give you a manyfold improvement over Access. Informix runs fine on Intel under: WinNT, Linux, SCO UNIX, Solaris x86, DG/UX, and others. However, you WILL tend to get better performance and more upward scaleability from a Sun box at the same CPU speed and number of processors. Art S. Kagel
