We are running on AIX and IDS Version 7.3.1. We ran a DR test today, where
we restored the software from the morning of Jan. 22, 2003, when completed,
using the ism_catalog command, we added in the volumes from the back up done
the night of the 22nd. When we issues the mount command on the 1st tape, it
noted that it was part of the catalog and mounted with no issue. When we
tried to restore using onbar -r -w it read the tape and then requested the
tape from the 21st.
Any suggestions on how we would get ism to accept a tape created after the
last software back up? Our normal process it to restore the software and the
back up from the same time frame. In this case we wanted to test what would
occur if they were different. We used the 21st to complete our test.
Thanks

Hi,
from your description I'm not quite sure I understood what exactly is your
problem.
However, I think it could have to do with the following known problem
PTS-B 133990.
Please read about the problem and the solution (workaround) for it :
PTS-B 133990 describes the following problem with the Informix Storage
Manager (ISM) Version 2.20.UC1x :
The command "ism_catalog -create_bootstrap ..." utilizes the
"savegrp" command with the default backup/archive level.
This level automatically evaluates to "full" upon first command
execution, but thereafter evaluates to an incremental level upon all
successive command executions.
Therefore the media/volume containing the first bootstrap creation
is always necessary in order to restore the bootstrap successfully.
Workaround :
To avoid the need for the first media/volume during bootstrap restore,
a bootstrap backup/archive of level "full" needs to be done every
time. To accomplish this, the level must be specified explicitely.
This is not possible with the "ism_catalog -create_bootstrap ..."
command.
Instead, the underlying command "savegrp" must be executed directly.
Replace the command "ism_catalog -create_bootstrap ..." with the
following :
$INFORMIXDIR/bin/savegrp -O -l full ISMData
where
"-O" is a capital-o (not a zero),
"ISMData" is the pool name where the bootstrap data should go,
the command must be executed as user "root".
E.g. in $INFORMIXDIR/bin/onbar (shell script), this replacement
should be done by the Informix Server System Administrator.
Also the output (both stdout and stderr) of the "savegrp" command
should be redirected to the ON-Bar activity log file (BAR_ACT_LOG
parameter from onconfig file).
Hope it helps,
Martin

Donald,
you didn't mention the ixbar.1 file. When doing a cold restore,
Informix has no system catalogs to look at, it looks at ixbar.1

I concur
with Norma. ISM looks at ixbar.<serverid> file. While backing
up, this is the most important file. I could suggest some file
massaging ideas but they are dangerous if not done properly.
If you have ixbar file from that day then restore it on the DRS and
then verify if your savesets from ixbar file matches with the files on
the system.
