Or do we tell the third > party to re-code there software. TSS sounds reminiscent of Temporary String Storage, but that was in Informix-4GL and an old version at that. Probably pre version 4.12? If that is the case, then upgrade, or as you say, tell them to recode. There should still be documentation about which describes what needs changing to avoid the problem.
