Well Ed it all depends on what hardware you are using from AT&T GIS. If you are running on a bunch of ole 3B2 like James, then you can pretty much forget it. If you have moved into the 20th century, you may have more sophisticated boxes there that can handle more transaction oriented processing. Online (per 6.0) was pretty good solution for those who wanted to get off of the Unix file system and run on the raw slices. Remote administration is the key and a DBA that is skilled in archiving techniques would not be a bad idea, but I agree with everyone who is telling you about remote access to those boxes... even an X.25 network over to them would give your central core of admins and dba folk the ability to handle most problems that you would come across. : I have to agree with JVEMO. : We are in the same shape- transitioning away from the old ATT/NCR junk. My : management just had to have Online on one of our 3B2's although I told them : it would perform extremely poorly in a 3B2 environment. Sure enough... : Unless you're on modern hardware, it just doesn't pay to run Online. Unless : you can give it enough memory, you're not going to get the most out of it's : super-duper gee-wizz cacheing doo-hickies. 3B2's just plain can't unless : you bought the RISC upgrade that no one else did. : Online is an administration pig requiring a great deal more DBA cycles to : keep running. SE on the other hand is well behaved and rarely acts up : unless provoked. : ============================================================================ : _______ : / | : James R. If you have the bucks, AT&T has come out with some pretty big beasts that can handle 4GIG of mem and plenty of processors, not to mention the external disk arrays... There is my 2cents, Robbie Bailey education about manufacturers can expand the mind...
