ER Modeling Tool Capable of Working with Informix
Posted in 2006
A user wanted an ER modelling tool to reverse-engineer Informix schemas for documentation and training, and found no Informix option in Embarcadero ER/Studio 7.0. Respondents suggested ERwin (powerful but ~$4000), Sybase PowerDesigner, SilverRun, Visio Professional, and noted AGS ServerStudio would add ER diagramming in its next release. One ER/Studio user (v6.0.1) said it isn't officially Informix-supported but works via ODBC for reverse engineering and HTML schema reports, needing manual fixes to data types (e.g. char(10) to boolean, blob/clob). No single definitive answer was settled on.

I am trying to find a tool that will allow me to import or connect to an Informix instance/database and capture the schema for use in both documenting and assist in the training of new personnel to our multiple databases. I recently downloaded the ER/Modeling tool "Embarcadero ERStudio 7.0" since it stated on its download page it was capable of working with Informix; however, within the tool I can find no mention of Informix databases at all :( Any assistance would be appreciated. Take care. Clifton _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!
I have used both Visio Professional and Erwin before with Informix. I prefer Erwin much better. You have more control over where the lines are placed. Erwin is not cheap though. Last time I looked it was close to $4000. I don't know about free ones, but three tools that I've used before with Informix successfully are: ERwin (from Computer Associates) PowerDesigner (from Sybase) and SilverRun (from Applied Information Science) They are all good tools, and all have good features, but none of these is free. I'd suggest taking a look at SilverRun. It may be a bit less expensive than the others, but has full functionality. HTH... We use ERStudio with informix, and we're pretty happy with it. After a little bit of tweaking (you have to remember to change char(10) to boolean, blob/clob, etc... after reverse engineering), we have no real problems with it. It generates lovely html reports that we use as documentation for our staff. You can post comments on each table, column, relationship. We also evaluated ERWin and PowerDesigner before we chose ERStudio. We liked ERWin a lot too, but the price (for the tools) was too high compared with ERStudio. I don't really use it to do data modeling, but for documentation and as a training tool, I've found that its enough. Sierra M. Thank you for responding. What version do you have of the package? I cannot find anything within version 7.0 that mentions Informix. I had heard good things about it in the past and wanted to use it but ran into the roadblock noted in my email. We're using version 6.0.1 -- (upgrading is on my list). We connect to our db via ODBC for reverse engineering/documentation purposes. I wouldn't use this tool to design a database and then engineer it into production. I don't think ERStudio officially supports Informix, just to be clear. We tried the trial version for awhile with Informix to be sure it worked for our purposes. We do have a support contract with them which gives us access to the usual upgrades, etc...I can send you a link to our doc if you'd like to see the schema reports. Sierra M. You might want to give a call to AGS as ServerStudio in its next release has ER diagramming.
