Format of sqlhosts file

Good morning! I am having some problems with ODBC drivers, which I've managed to get past, but not without getting very confused about the $NFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file. Can anyone enlighten me on its format, please, or point me to some resource. I am, and will continue to google, but not sure really what I'm looking for, not being an Informix expert. Thanks Graham -- The answer's always "Yes". Now, what was the question? ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! >100,000 Newsgroups ---= East/West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---
Graham,
Please tell us which ODBC driver and Informix engine version you are using, and
on what operating systems. The "sqlhosts" file may not be relevant to your
problem, but the format of this file is:
INFORMIXSERVER protocol host service
For example
myserver onsoctcp myhost myservice
for a network connection to Informix Dynamic Server running on "myhost" with
INFORMIXSERVER=myserver
and
myservice 987/tcp
in "/etc/services".
The manuals are at:

Hi Graham, What platform are you on? For windows, you need to use the setnet32 application to set the Informix environment. Here are the links to the Informix Documentation: Info Centre: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/ids9help/index.jsp Documents online: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/ Cheers, "Graham Nicholls" <graham@rockcons.co.uk> wrote in message news:1116925588_140@surge17-west.com... > Good morning! > > I am having some problems with ODBC drivers, which I've managed to get > past, > but not without getting very confused about the $NFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts > file. OK, thanks, both. I believe it works like this if anyone else is
interested.
This is for SE v7.x (online is similar, but we don't have that installed for
me to test). I couldn't find a definitive reference for this, despite
looking in the manuals, but that could well be user error!
4 fields: LABEL PROTOCOL HOST PORT
LABEL is arbitrary. Its only use is that when starting sqlexecd from a
script in /etc/rc.d, you use the label to give tell sqlexecd which line to
use. Update: LABEL is not entirely arbitrary in that the ODBC driver must
use the same name in its "Informix server" field - why I have no idea,
since you give it the host name and port, as well as the database name
later in the configuration fields. Also, 4js genero uses this to set the
INFORMIXSERVER shell variable.
PROTOCOL is actually 3 related fields conflated into an 8 character string.
The 3 fields are as follows:
XX 2 character server type - "on" for IDS, and "se" for Standard engine.
XXX 3 char for connection method. This can be "soc" for sockets, tli for
the old AFAIK only used on SCO Unix, "ipc" for interprocess communication.
Apparently "ipc" is unreliable, and since it it for local connections (ie to
the same machine) it it of no practical use.
XXX 3 character protocol type (if you will) field which refines the previous
field - ie for ipc, it can be "pip" (named pipes?), or "shm" for the "ipc"
connection method. For the "soc" method, it can be "tcp", for a tcp
connection, or "ipx" for a novell network.
HOST struck me as a rather spurious field until I considered multihomed
hosts. It is the IP address for the sqlexecd daemon to listen on. I guess
on a multihomed host you _may_ want to listen on one or more ports, or not.
This field can be either an IP address, or a host name, in which
case /etc/hosts will be used to resolve the hostname (or in fact
nsswitch.conf, anyone?).
PORT is the tcp port to listen on - presumably only relevant in the case of
"soc" connection methods. There can only be one sqlexecd daemon listening
per unique IP_ADD:PORT combination. Like HOST above, this can be either a
port number (best, IMHO) or a name, in which case /etc/services is used to
resolve the port number.
You can have as many entries as you like in this file; only those lines
referred to in the invocation of the sqlexecd daemon are used. How Genero
knows which lines are relevant, I don't know.
Have I missed anything here?
Thanks for your help.

The answer's always "Yes".
Now, what was the question?
