Eliminate ontape? failover issue

WE are moving an application suite to a HP server cluster which offers
the MC Service Guard to move the suite of tools as one "package" to an
other server of the cluster in the event of a failure on the home
server. We are thinking about what to do with the tape drive and tape
that are used for the ontape storage of logical logs. The tape drive
hardware can not be moved as a part of the fail over.
It seems that perhaps given a sufficiently large disk and a
sufficiently large number of logical logs that a copy of the logs to
tape could be eliminated. Is this possible? How can the log files be
cleared at database backup without using ontape and a tape drive?

Robert,
What version of Informix are you running? I have created a
backup/restore scenario for one of my clients where tape drives are at
the most, secondary. I am using ONBAR, however, and that is why I am
asking about the Informix version.
Please let me know and I will do all I can to help you out.
Thanks,
Stephen.

Before you buy.
If you're not concerned with saving them, e.g. you have completed
another level 0 archive before filling the logs, you could just flush
them out to /dev/null. Set LTAPEDEV to /dev/null and execute ontape -a.
Course you'll need to do a new level 0 as soon as possible after that,
or risk losing the data that was generated between the last L0 and the
flush. We have had to employ this scheme many time (not by choice) when
a misbehaving storage manager decided to stop backing up logs.
The version of Informix on the new system is 7.31 UC 7.

Strange. Trying that, We get a message saying the transaction log can not be
dumped to /dev/null.
