OnBar and ISM
Posted in 2008
Sue was moving from IDS 9.21 to 9.40, where ON-Archive no longer exists, and hit repeated failures with ON-Bar plus ISM that IBM support couldn't fix. 'onbar -b -w' aborted with NetWorker RPC/'Unable to send chunk'/broken pipe errors, XBSA BSAEndData system error, and an assert failure in mt_shm_free_pool in the online log. Replies suggested ontape as a simpler alternative, noted ON-Bar also works with NetBackup/Tivoli, and advised enabling NetWorker debugging (NSR_DEBUG_FILE/LEVEL), checking NetWorker/NMI versions and host name resolution. No confirmed resolution is recorded in the thread.

Currently I am running IDS 9.21.HC6 and using On-Archive for backups. I am in the process of upgrading to 9.40.HC7 and On-Archive no longer exists. I have been trying to use OnBar and ISM but having various problems which IBM have so far been unable to resolve. Would On-Tape be a better option for backups ? What do people out there generally use to backup Informix databases ? Sue
Sue,
Onbar is very easy, but perhaps you are not getting the right
experienced IBM assistance.
If you can do on-archive, you can certainly use onbar. (I used to do
onarchive).
Does your company use something like netbackup or IBM tivoli for other
backups such as systems and databases?
Onbar will work in tandem with other vendor backup software (not just
ISM).
ISM is "legato lite" last I remember and maybe is not the best way to
go? =20
But I have no ISM experience, only onbar & netbackup (from symantec)....
Onbar is very cool. It is worth your while to hang in there and figure
it out.
What O/S are you on?
Thanks,
Norma Jean Sebastian

Hi Sue,
We are running IDS 10.00.FC4 using onbar and ISM. We also experienced a number
of problems with ISM in the beginning, but pretty much have worked through
them and have been running successfully for about 8 months. ISM has very
limited capability, but works for our current needs. Any specific issues?

I've used ontape for years on a variety of platforms with no issues.
Great if you can get your entire archive on one tape, but even tape
swapping is (realitively) simple if you have a tape library and
install expect. Ontape is a bit more limited in restoring, tends to be
the entire instance, but you may be doing this any way depending on
how many databases or spaces you have and how dependant on each other
they are. Horses for courses and what skill/kit are available and what
you want to achieve. Keep it simple then at 04:00 on a Monday morning
when you simply must restore by 09:00 it will pay back in spades.

When I run onbar -b -w to do a simple full system backup I get

There is nothing else that I am aware of running on the server that could be
interrupting the backup.
I have IDS 9.40.HC7, ISM and On-Bar running successfully on another server. My
UNIX administrator and I have checked all we can between the 2 servers but
there must be something different that is causing the issues.
Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received as IBM have not managed
to identify the problem let alone resolve it !!!!!
I suggest that you set debugging in Networker as shown below and
run the backup again.
export NSR_DEBUG_FILE=/nsr/applogs/nmi.log
export NSR_DEBUG_LEVEL=9
When the backup terminates check the logfile. Note that with
NSR_DEBUG_LEVEL set to 9 causes NSR to be very verbose, thus the debug
files grow very quickly.
Check your Networker versions, and if possible move to Networker
server version 7.4 and NMI version 3.00 though it does not support
version IDS 11 yet :(.
The error message "NetWorker: RPC error, Unable to send chunk"
indicates that it communication between server and client was
interrupted whilst processing a requested. Check that name resolution
services are working correctly as Networker is a bit fussy about name
resolution.
