Saw something like that on DG/UX a few years ago. The operators were using a DG/UX feature to redirect the system console to a remote terminal and that was locking /dev/console and preventing engine startup. We had to logout the terminal to start the engine. I think changing the CONSOLE parameter in the ONCONFIG file to a file or /dev/null finally solved the problem as the default /dev/console. Perhaps yours is set to /dev/pty? Art S.
