Help backing up logs to disk.
Posted in 2000
A new DBA on HP-UX tried to back up logical logs to disk with onarchive and got "ARC-E-01846 ... Log backup to device nul not allowed", despite having defined a vset/volume and a DISK device in config.arc. Advice included avoiding onarchive in favour of ontape -s/-a, and checking LTAPEDEV (it was /dev/null). Editing LTAPEDEV in the ONCONFIG file alone didn't help: Art Kagel explained LTAPEDEV is read from shared memory, so the change needs an engine restart or must be made via onmonitor. The poster changed it in onmonitor and the log backups then worked.

I am new at this and am just trying to set up Informix backup on our test HP-UX server. To begin with, I am trying to backup the logical logs to disk using onarchive. I have created a vset and volume for the backup in /home/informix/archive/logs and have successfully gotten the request to do the backup entered into the catalog. When I execute the command though I get the following error: Onarchive> EXECUTE/VSET=logs Execute pending request 00000008 for vset logs. Executing... ARC-E-01846, Error received from Informix server while processing archive or backup. IFMX-E-API, Log backup to device nul not allowed In the config.arc file I have: DEVICE DISK = /home/informix/archive What am I missing to make this work? Do I need to change any of the configurations in onconfig.ifmx? I would appreciate any leads since I have been going through the online documentation and cannot seem to get it to work. Several words of advice: STAY AWAY FROM ONARCHIVE!
Onarchive is on its way out ... and if you have to call support (where I
used to work), there are only a FEW engineers that have played with (trained
on) it enough to assist you.
Sorry ... but that is the truth of it. ISM is possibly on its way out as
well, leaving you with the need to purchase a storage manager if it goes
out. If your system is less than 14 GB, ontape will probably work well for
you.

Hi, We have been using ONArchive for years here at HP. I think the problem is that LTAPEDEV is set to /dev/null in ONCONFIG. You also should have run DEFINE/VOLUME on that VSET before using it. You would then have a V1 directory and a VOL.HDR file in that directory. Hi!
I've used the ontape -s and ontape -a.
They are easier to handle!
When you need to run'em in an cronjob simply pipe the answers to it
though a file..
e.g. ontape -s < answers.txt

Thanks for your help. I actually forgot to add that I did run
DEFINE/VOLUME and created VOL.HDR
in /home/informix/archive/logs/VOL.HDR. I changed the LTAPEDEV in
ONCONFIG and am still getting the same error.
Here is part of my onconfig.ifmx:
# Physical Log Configuration
PHYSDBS rootdbs # Location (dbspace) of physical log
PHYSFILE 4000 # Physical log file size (Kbytes)
# Logical Log Configuration
LOGFILES 6 # Number of logical log files
LOGSIZE 500 # Logical log size (Kbytes)
# Diagnostics
MSGPATH /app/informix/new.log # System message log file path
CONSOLE /dev/null # System null message pathALARMPROGRAM /usr/informix/log_full.sh # Alarm program path
# System Archive Tape Device
TAPEDEV /dev/null # Tape device path
TAPEBLK 16 # Tape block size (Kbytes)
TAPESIZE 10240 # Maximum amount of data to put on tape
(Kbytes)
# Log Archive Tape Device
LTAPEDEV /home/informix/archive/logs # Log tape device path
LTAPEBLK 16 # Log tape block size (Kbytes)
LTAPESIZE 10240 # Max amount of data to put on log tape
(Kbytes)
In my config.arc I have:
DEVICE DISK = /home/informix/archive/log
Do you have any other suggestions? My log files are filling up and need
to get backed up as soon as possible.
Thank you

Before you buy.
Have you bounced the engine since changing the ONCONFIG file? LTAPEDEV
chages do not take effect until the engine is bounced unless you made the
change using onmonitor which will also change the value stored in shared
memory. This behavior is different from TAPEDEV which is always taken from
the ONCONFIG file NOT shared memory.
To change it in onmonitor, manually chage it to something else, then run
onmonitor and change it back in there.

Thank you, this was the problem. I changed the LTAPEDEV using onmonitor
and was able to perform the log backups.
