Help! Error -956: My system doesen't trust itself

ODS Release 7.13.UC5
Hi family,
I'm overlooking some stupid detail in configuring an instance and can't
figure out where.
I have two instances on one machine. In my default - the one I set up
my ENV for when I log in - I have no problem connecting. In the other
server instance I get the following error when I try to connect to a
database.
$ dbaccess - -
> database rga;
956: Client host or user (jake@bacchus.apparel.net) is not trusted bythe server.
No such file or directory
Error in line 1Near character position 1
Huh? It's a local server! Whaddaymean, not trusted?!
onstat -m shows the message in the log:15:11:33 listener-thread: err = -956: Client host or user
(jake@bacchus.apparel.net) is not trusted by the server.
As it happens, there is no /etc/hosts.equiv nor any need for one - the
connections are all local. Besides, if this were the problem the other
instance would be just as useless!
The sqlhosts file entry for this system has only a sockets server name,
no shm entry. Otherwise, it's logically identical to the other entries.
The service entry in /etc/services seems in order as well.
The biggest difference I can find between these setups is the NETTYPE
parameter. In the system I connect to, this is 2 lines:
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,100,CPU # Override sqlhosts nettype parameters
NETTYPE soctcp,2,100,NET # Override sqlhosts nettype parameters
In the paranoid system, this is:
NETTYPE soctcp,2,100,CPU # Override sqlhosts nettype parameters
Before y'all jump all over this, I recall a problem in a release 6.0
system that was solved by letting a CPU-VP handle listener threads for
the socket connection.
Besides, this has nothing to do with trusted systems.
My nose tells me the error message is the wrong message for the error.
Has anyone ever seen this? What am I overlooking?
Thanks.
