While informix database 7.22 can't use : UPPER

Likely because you have a version earlier than 7.30 which does not have an UPPER function. Art S. Have you tried the upscol utility: (from the command line type upscol and follow the menus, doc from Informix is minimal). If this works for you be aware that I do not think dbexport will export the things you set up, I would document elsewhere to be sure.
