Large SQL and Informix 7.31

Hi All, I have a problem running a large piece of SQL on 7.31. UNIX : HP-UX 11 INFORMIX : 7.31 CONNECTION : DBACCESS via SHM or TCP Problem. When running an enormous piece of SQL the server raises and assert failure during the optimisation process and fails. The server then eventually panics and comes down. If I reduce the size of statement by returning less columns but leaving ALL the joins etc, it works. The SQL worked on the previous version of informix (7.2x). It appears the SQL is blowing some internal SQL buffer. Has anyone seen this before ? does anyone know of any workarounds ? is there an enironment var I can set to increase the size of the internal SQL buffers.
