IDS 11.70.fc5 Aix 7.1 Trying to move some data from Oracle ... into IDS ... In oracle one of the columns is defined as "long" ... wondering what the informix comparable is... Thanks ... Peter Logan Senior Database Administrator Phone: 616/878-8309
Hi Peter, LONG is an Oracle data type for storing character data of variable length up to 2 Gigabytes in length (bigger version of the VARCHAR2 datatype). In Informix either text or clob would be an equivalent. If you have only up to 32000 bytes stored, you can use lvarchar(32000). This is an old Oracle 8 variable length character type column with lengths up to 2GB which was deprecated in later versions. If the actual data is less than 32K you can use CHAR or LVARCHAR, if it is longer you will have to store the data in a TEXT or CLOB type which are simple and smart large object types respectively. You cannot search in a TEXT or CLOB type column directly, however, the BTS (Basic Text Search) datablade can index and search inside of large objects. So, if needed, you can use BTS functions to search on the contents of TEXT or CLOB columns. Art Art S.
