Situation : IDS version 7.30 UC6. I am working with an Online version 7.30 UC6. Is it possible to retrieve data from a database version 5.05 on another machine ? TIA Doris Willaert Suzuki Belgium sdwilla@suzuki.be

Yes, this is possible, depending on what you really mean.
The machine with version 5.05 must be running Informix-Online 5.05 and
Informix-Star 5.05, then you can access that machine with the correct entry in
your $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file.
I have a mix of IDS 7.30UC6 on one machine and Online/Star 5.10 on another
machine. On the 7.30 machine, the line for the 5.10 server is:
innserver olsoctcp oit14x sqlexec
With that, I can connect to a database on the 5.10 server with the following
command:
database <dbname>@innserver
and then retrieve data, e.g.:
select count(*) from <tablename>
However, I cannot retrieve data from the remote database while a connection
to a database on the local server is open (no difference whether via shared
memory or nettype ontlitcp). When I issue the command
select count(*) from <dbname>@innserver:<tablename>
I get the error:
908: Attempt to connect to database server (innserver, conerr=-25592, oserr=2)
I assume that there are problems with the different nettypes (olsoctcp for
the 5.10 system, ontlitcp or onipcshm for the 7.30 system). I cannot try
using the same nettypes, since onsoctcp hangs the 7.30 server.
Regards, Richard
