Perhaps my earlier plea was too wordy (or so braindead that folks thought me jesting). Condensed version: Can a field populated within a construct be evaluated while in the construct? before field field2 if field1 = "EMPL" then do some stuff end if Additional info may be obtained by referring to my earlier query beginning with 'Oops' Thanks, carlos -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carlos Benjamin, Jr. (623) 869 - 2364 Programmer/Analyst/Consultant Currently Assigned to Central Arizona Project mailto:inf999@cap-az.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also "After Field field1", which will probably be safer, since there is no guarantee that the user will end up in field2 after entering field1. The "After Field field1" option, however, may require you to use getfldbuf() (or whatever that function is called), to get the contents of the buffer, since it may not yet be in 'field1'. Yes, but normally you wouldn't do that until the end (AFTER CONSTRUCT at the earliest). Check GET_FIELDBUF() after checking my spelling of it. You normally do the work after the CONSTRUCT, or in the AFTER CONSTRUCT, so that if the user goes back to field1 and changes EMPL to CONT, you don't have to undo the stuff you did.
