KAIO on HP/UX 10.20 & Informix 7.30
Posted in 1999
Melvin asked whether KAIO (KAIOON) works well with Informix 7.30 on HP-UX 10.20 and whether it helps performance. Replies were mostly positive: users of 7.24/7.30 reported it working on raw devices with roughly 15-20% gains and fewer UNIX processes. Reported snags: one site hit blob-page errors after HP-UX Y2K patches (fixed by an Informix patch nobody could name), another saw oninit/onstat/onmode hang with shared memory on 7.24 - advice was to reduce the number of shared-memory segments by raising SHMVIRTSIZE, and that hang is said to be fixed in later 7.2x and all 7.3x releases. No single definitive resolution is recorded.

Hi, Is anyone out there using KAIO on HP/UX 10.20 and Informix 7.30? Does it work? Did performance improve? Did performance decrease? Any problems with running KAIO? Thanks in advance. -- Melvin Mariney e-mail: melvin.mariney2@bridge.bellsouth.com

Got only one problem - after installing Y2K patches for HP-UX 10.20 the error occur in blob page structures. Informix Tech support tells, that there is specific patch, that fixes this problem, and that this problem is usual for HP-UX. Sorry, don't remember patch number. > Hi, > > Is anyone out there using KAIO on HP/UX 10.20 and Informix 7.30? Does > it work? Did performance improve? Did performance decrease? Don't use it.
I mean you can use raw devices which are faster than cooked device.
But do not set the environment variable KAIOON specified in release note.
It can make some processes - oninit, onstat, onmode ,glance - which use
shared memory, hung.
I have experienced such a thing with IDS 7.24UC4 on HPUX10.20.
As far as I know, it is due to platform's limit, not Informix Dynamic
Server's limit.

I'm using KAIO on HP/UX 10.20 & IDS 7.30 UC7 in a month. All works good but
i can't do perfomance comparison since use KAIO from first installation.
Maybe a little problem exists, after IDS have started with oninit and
stopped before finishing initialization stage it doesn't graceful shutdown
and it needs to kill oninit process.

I think it is possible if you connect to IDS over ipcshm from session when
KAIOON environment variable is not set.
If you use network connection or set KAIOON for all users who can work with
IDS from the same host you solve problem.

I am using 7.24.UC4 & HP-UX 10.20 with Y2K patches installed. KAIO is enabled, no problems at all. Performance gain is about 15..20%. Shared memory problem is well-known : try to minimise a number of segment that IDS uses ( increase SHMVIRTSIZE ). Sergey

Yes, this is a known problem with many v7.2x versions and HP-UX 10.20. It
is alleged to be fixed in later versions of v72x, and on all v7.3x versions.

I use only onsoctcp .
And when only 1 user is connected( informix user with KAIOON variable set to
"1" ), the process hanging occured too.

Do you use KAIOON ?
If so, may I know your environment plz?

IDS 7.30.uc7 HPUX 10.20 No problems here . . . I can't clearly quantify any performance gains, but we don't have any problems with KAIO that we had in 7.23.uc11. Fewer UNIX processes to age, also. I have noticed a bit higher LOAD when I run top, but nothing of a performance issue.
