RE: Using "hot spare" in a RAID-0 setup of an Informix DB ...

No, it wont work. Not for Informix or any DB/OS. When a drive fails in a RAID set 0, the data is lost forever. Hot spare does not help with RAID-0. How can the hot spare drive recreate data of a failed drive. Yes RAID-5 hot spare will work, but RAID 5 is slow. -----Original Message----- From: manaloe@my-deja.com [SMTP:manaloe@my-deja.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 9:03 PM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Using "hot spare" in a RAID-0 setup of an Informix DB ... Hi to all Informix experts out there ... We have a RAID-0 setup for our Informix-DB (and right now, addding a RAID-1 mirroring is kind a expensive for my client) so we are thinking of adding just a couple of disks for "hot spare". Just so we have some protection in case of disk failure. Does "hot spare" disks works with Informix - meaning, will Informix be able to recover and operate continously if some disk failure happens to one of our RAID-0 component and SEVM automatically using the "hot spare" disk to take over from the failed disk component? We are using Informix-Online 7.24.UC6 under Solaris 2.5.1 with Sun Enterprise Volume Manager (SEVM) 2.5 for the RAID-0 setup. That's all and all inputs/comments will be greatly appreciated.
