Growth Edition x WorkGroup Edition
Posted in 2015
Question: is there a real difference between Informix "Growth Edition" and "Workgroup Edition" (11.70.FC8 on Linux), and is it the same binary? Answer from the list: it's essentially just a marketing rename. Workgroup was renamed Growth around 11.50.FC7, and Growth became Workgroup again in 12.10, so 11.70 only ships as Growth Edition — there is no 11.70 Workgroup Edition. The editions are meant to be equivalent/interchangeable, with the renaming driven by aligning (or differentiating) Informix naming with DB2. Thread then drifts into off-topic banter.

There is no 11.70.FC8 Workgroup Edition. Growth Edition was introduced with 11.50.FC7, replacing Workgroup Edition at that time. In 12.10, Growth Edition has been replaced by Workgroup Edition. In 11.70 there is only Growth Edition, no Workgroup Edition. There shouldn't be much differences, as these Editions were supposed to replace each other.
No. Mostly it is a name change to bring Informix Edition naming in line with DB2 Edition naming (interesting thing is this was changed from Workgroup to Growth several years ago to differentiate Informix Editions from DB2 Editions <sigh>). As per Wolfgang and Art .. We used to have Enterprise and Workgroup. In 2010-ish this was re-branded as Ultimate and Growth. (Our then pre-sales administrator said they suggested to her sizes of condom rather than software versions!) In 2013-ish it went back to Enterprise and Workgroup. Now it would seem Workgroup is Growth again. They should be interchangeable; it's just marketing blurb. Obviously IBM is busy grappling with the major issues facing Informix ;-)
Yes major issues like being the only product line IBM has that increased sales and profits this year! Really screws up their planning. Oooh please share more Good News!! We in the former colonial power are excluded from any detailed info on Informix's performance within IBM (or to be fair any specific product's performance).
