Floyd,
Yes, that had been checked. There were no (and still are no) old oninit
processes, shared memory blocks or semaphores.
I could try a machine reboot, I can't imagine what that would do exactly
that could rectify the situation.
But, thank you for your input, I appreciate any and all offers of help
at this stage.

Just a thought Burton,
Did you check to make sure there are no oninit processes hung out there ?
ps -ef |grep oninit,
also ipcs make sure no shm segments are hung.
As a last resort, you may also try rebooting the box.

Are the permissions on your disk chunks OK? Are they the same names as
before? Are your Informix binary and library permissions correct? Is your
