Restoration stuck in the middle... help required
Posted in 2009

I was restoring the entire informix database 7.13 on hp-UNIX 10.01.
My level 0 backup is on different mount points. So I have pointed the first
tape mount point in the IDS onconfig file and the restore was restarted.
TAPEDEV /BACKUP/BKUP01/bkf.1.091101
Now it is asking for second tape in the occurence and when I am trying to
specify second tape, by modifying the onconfig it is still referring to the
first tape and it is not accepting tape 2.
How I can force ontape to read the second tape from command line or read it
from the onconfig file. Please help.
see below.
Please mount tape 2 on /BACKUP/BKUP01/bkf.1.091101 and press Return to
continue ...
Tape sequence number is 1, expecting 2
Bad tape.
You can't change the onconfig to point at the next file in sequence, you
have to change the filename of the next file (or create a link) to match
what's already in the onconfig. That's why a few weeks ago I suggested
that you use a fake filename in your onconfig to make moving the files
around easier.

You cannot. You will need to set TAPEDEV to a symbolic link that you change
to point to each mount point as ontape prompts for each successive tape.

You can not change TAPEDEV in the middle of the restore. The solution is
to rename tape1 and link tape2 to the old tape1 name, like this:
mv /BACKUP/BKUP01/bkf.1.091101 /BACKUP/BKUP01/bkf.1.091101_OLD
ln -s <your_tape2_path> /BACKUP/BKUP01/bkf.1.091101
If you have more than two tapes... repeat for each one.

Tell me, what recovery would be possible if the machine burns down, or the disks explode in a puff of binary digits? The lesson here is, be conservative, sensible and by the book when taking archives. They ain't a joke anyway, move the completed file to another name, and move the next file into place on the first name. But that's already been said a few times now. --Boundary-00=_1+K8KvpC8vxz2Bo
