Problem on IDS 7.31 with Raw Device and SCO

Dears, I have 1 machine with the SCO and Informix 7,31 using Raw Device. My database has 3 dbspaces (rootdbs, dbspactemp, dbspace1). All chunks are in raw device. Dbspace1 and all its 5 chunks are offline. When I try to change the status for on-line the IDS returns error "0". I would like some suggestion to recover these chunks. I think that the SCO lost the raw configuration. I would like to known how to create raw devices on SCO. P.S.: The customer does not have backup. Thank´s. Hi, you need to get IBM Informix Technical Support to look into this problem. They will check what the problem is and if it can be repaired, they will do that as well. If the customer does not have backup, then a support contract is a good idea ... ;) Regards, Martin -- Martin Fuerderer IBM Informix Development Munich, Germany Information Management Informix URLs list: http://home.arcor.de/mfu1/informix/urls.html ids-bounces@iiug.org wrote on 21.12.2006 06:16:06: > > Dears, > > I have 1 machine with the SCO and Informix 7,31 using Raw Device. > > My database has 3 dbspaces (rootdbs, dbspactemp, dbspace1). > > All chunks are in raw device. > > Dbspace1 and all its 5 chunks are offline. Can you 'dd' the devices , e.g. dd if=<device> bs=2k count=<some number> of=/dev/null ? Check the permissons and ownership of the raw devices. What error messages were displayed in the online.log before the dbspace1 was set offline ? > > I would like to known how to create raw devices on SCO. In this case, the customer can hope that it is possible to recreate the raw devices and that the data on the disk has not been destroyed yet . ( e.g because a filesystem has been creasted on them ) If a is not possible to recreate the disk data, then the database has to be recreated and populated from external data sources I strongly advice to contact IDS Informix support to help you with this issue . Dear,
Maybe devices entries have simply be removed.
Check with onstat -d for names and verify if thez are present in /dev
directory.
You can just recreate them using mknod command (difficult if you don't
know the major/minor numbers) or preferably using divvy command. In
this case, you have just to rename the existing divisions to the
original names (use only the n command), then exit and install new
division. Since you just modified the names, it should not be risky.

If there's no backup you may be out of luck. You could call tech support. Sometimes (depending on what's causing the down chunks) they can connect and fix it. Also, make sure the devices are still listed in the /dev directory and have the correct permissions (owned by informix:informix and permissions 660). What does the online log say? As far as creating the raw devices, I believe it's just a matter of divvying your physical disk into non-FS volumes, like this: +-------------------+------------+--------+---+-------------+------------+ | Name | Type | New FS | # | First Block | Last Block | +-------------------+------------+--------+---+-------------+------------+ | s1020 | NON FS | no | 0 | 0| 2101781| | s1021 | NON FS | no | 1 | 2101782| 4203563| | s1022 | NON FS | no | 2 | 4203564| 6305345| | s1023 | NON FS | no | 3 | 6305346| 8407127| | s1024 | NON FS | no | 4 | 8407128| 10508909| | s1025 | NON FS | no | 5 | 10508910| 12610691| | s1026 | NON FS | no | 6 | 12610692| 14712473| | s102 | WHOLE DISK | no | 7 | 0| 14716543| +-------------------+------------+--------+---+-------------+------------+ 14712480 1K blocks for divisions, 4064 1K blocks reserved for the system n[ame] Name or rename a division. c[reate] Create a new file system on this division. d[elete] Delete a file system on this division. t[ype] Select or change filesystem type on new filesystems. p[revent] Prevent a new file system from being created on this division. s[tart] Start a division on a different block. e[nd] End a division on a different block. r[estore] Restore the original division table. We run about 20 instances of 7.31 on SCO, so it does work (as well as SCO ever works, anyway).
