Re: DBTEMP

You basically reiterated both my point and my question. I HAVE DBSPACETEMP set
in the onconfig file (I didn't have the environment variable DBSPACETEMP set
however, only in onconfig)! The engine IS using the temp spaces defined by
DBSPACETEMP. However, SOMETHING is also using the temp space defined by the
DBTEMP environment variable (which isn't defined in the ODS Admin manuals, only
in SQL manual which says it is an SE only setting). My question is what is using
this space and why? Why isn't it using the spaces defined by DBSPACETEMP all the
time?

For NT:
An example ONCONFIG entry for DBSPACETEMP:
DBSPACETEMP tempdbs1
assuming the temp dbspace called temdbs1, created with the onspaces
command, not the Space Explorer. Space Explorer will not create temp
dbspaces correctly you will have to create them with onspaces, using
the -t flag thusly:
( ON NT )
set inst_name=%INFORMIXSERVER%
set ifmx_data=IFMXDATA
set drv_ltr=C
onmode -sy
echo "" > %drv_ltr%:\\%ifmx_data%\\%inst_name%\\tempdbs1_dat.000
onspaces -c -d tempdbs3 -t -p
%drv_ltr%:\\%ifmx_data%\\%inst_name%\\tempdbs1_dat.000 -o 0 -s 50000
Ignore the comments you find in the ONCONFIG and use the above
example, especially for more than one dbspaces you've set up. The
colon-delimitation doesn't work, it's all lies. For example:
DBSPACETEMP tempdbs1,tempdbs2,tempdbs3
for 3 temp dbspaces.
If you don't have DBSPACETEMP set, then yes, the available space on
the drive where Informix resides will get eaten up for temp usage,
especially during an NT backup, when onfoobar decides to first dump the
data to disk, then to tape. I guess this would apply to large sorts
as well as backups. Creating the tempdbs spaces allows a neat and
tidy way of managing temp usage. Keep in mind that usage will
distribute round-robin amongst all the tempdbs spaces, and it's a
good idea to have more than one temp dbspace.
To confirm your temp dbspaces are actually going to be used for temp
space, do an "onstat -d", and check the flags for the temp dbspaces.
If you don't see "2001" or a "T" flag next to the dbspace then it
isn't going to be treated as a temp space.
Hope this is of some help,
:-)
