ALARMPROGRAM: Event Alarms Filtering?
Posted in 2015
A user on IDS 11.70 wanted to suppress ALARMPROGRAM notifications (severity 3 e-mails/incidents) raised when he deliberately stops Enterprise Replication during nightly dbexport runs, without editing the alarm script. Suggestions: have the export script touch a flag file that the ALARMPROGRAM checks (Art Kagel), temporarily reset ALARMPROGRAM to /dev/null with onmode -wm and restore it afterwards, check the ALRM_ALL_EVENTS onconfig setting (Alexandre Marini), and Madison Pruet noted ER alarms can be disabled individually via an onconfig parameter. The poster accepted these as a usable workaround; others questioned using dbexport instead of ontape/onbar.

Hello,
IDS 11.70
I need to find out if there is a way to force ALARMPROGRAM not to trigger
itself whenever certain types of events happen.
For example, I am making dbexport backups of all dbs during night, and I
need to temporarily stop ER. This event is with type WARNING and color
YELLOW, resulting in severity 3. My ALARMPROGRAM is set to PAGERADMIN=3,
thus I receive e-mail and an incident is being generated in a console.
But I want somehow to tell ALARMPROGRAM not to fire during the time
dbexport is being run. Afterwards, when replication is re-enabled, I want
again to monitor for cdr stop events as expected.
Do you have some idea without modifying the ALARMPROGRAM script?
Thanks!

Lyubomir Grigorov

Touch a file in your export script and check for the file at the top of the
ALARMPROGRAM script or at the cases that you want to disable. When the
export script ends delete the file.

Hello,
First thing you should be aware of: dbexport are not made for backup purposes.
If you want to do manual backups, the most indicated way is through ontape or
onbar programs.
You can try to change ALARMPROGRAM while the engine is running, through
"onmode -wm" command.
Set it to /dev/null, I think it should work.
Don't forget to get it back to the original value after your dbexport is
finished.

Another thing, if you really need to run dbexport, check the value of your
ALRM_ALL_EVENTS onconfig variable.

Alexandre:
Many sites use dbexport for "safety" backups that they can use for
restoring a few records that might be fumble fingered.
BTW: If someone needs to do a dbexport for this purpose without the locking
problems you can use my dbexport replacement utility myexport!

Thank you for your comments Art and Alexandre! It will do the trick as a
workaround.
I am also not the biggest fan of exports, but we use them a lot for cloning
to another sites for example, or by the devs for testing and for what Art
mentioned.
onbar is our primary backup method.

The ER alarms can be indivually disabled with an onconfig parameter.

Subject:ALARMPROGRAM: Event Alarms Filtering? [35969]
Hello,
Thanks!
BR,
Lyubomir Grigorov

hello
must say I an surprised to read this.

I find using ontape is best way to move dbs around much easier and faster then
using export/import. I guess depends on how big you dbs are.
Also suspending ER while doing export is kinda risky I would have thought.
