Informix 10.00.TC5 CKPT REQ Logica Log Full
Posted in 2011
After a server restart interrupted a long-transaction rollback, IDS 10.00.TC5 on Windows 2003 came up in fast recovery, filled all logical logs and then hung in quiescent mode: onparams, ontape -c/-a, onmode -j all simply didn't respond (DYNAMIC_LOGS was already 2, LBU_PRESERVE 0). Suggestions included onparams -a (notably the -i option to insert a log after the current one), ontape -a, and calling support. IBM support explained the engine can't free a log containing an open BEGIN TRANSACTION and waits for a checkpoint; the options offered were upgrading to a fix release for the known bug, or a remote support session using external tools to unlock the instance at the cost of consistency (or restore from backup). No confirmation of which was applied.

During a LONG TRANSACTION ROLL BACK, Informix server (Windows 2003 server) has
been restarted.
Now Informix starts in FAST RECOVERY MODE and uses all the logical log so when
Informix changes automatically to QUIESCENT MODE all logical log are full and
I can't do nothing from my command prompt.
I checked the ONCONFIG parameter LBU_PRESERVE but it's set to 0 so I haven't
any free log to operate.
If I try to create new logs manually Informix is not responding
If I try to backup logs with ontape -c Informix is not responding
Il I try low level backup Informix is not responding
I tryed to start informix with "starts server_name -s" to start Informix
direclty in quiescent mode to prevent FAST RECOVERY but wasn't working.
I tryed to modify the ONCONFIG parameter LOGFILES to increase the number of
logical log files but Informix don't create any new logs.
Are there any solution to my problem?
Thank you
Marco Lenta
If you want to increse the number of logical logs, use then 'onparams' command
to add it

Did you try an ontape -a?

Did you try shutting down the server, then set the
onconfig paramater DYNAMIC_LOGS to the value of 2.
# DYNAMIC_LOGS - The type of dynamic log allocation.
# Acceptable values are:
# 2 Automatic. Informix adds a new logical log to the
# root dbspace when necessary.

If that doesn't work then call Support (or Oninit) and get some more log
space added to allow the engine to start fully

Failure is not as frightening as regret.
If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.
I can't add new log with onparams because Informix seems non reponding after
FAST RECOVERY.
I logged on Informix server with user informix and from the command prompt
tryied to use some command but informix responds only to analysis commands
like onstat, onlog ecc...
I tryied to use su - informix using commands on the $ prompt but change
nothing.
When I try ontape -c or ontape -a or onmode -j I don't see the CPU working in
task manager. Oninit is still 0% CPU.
Thank You
My ONCONFIG file has already DYNAMIC_LOGS set to 2 so I expected that Informix
creates more logs when necessary. But It's not working.
I supposed that my logical log DBSPACE was full but onstat -d says 97997 free
on the last chunk, each chunk is 500000 sized.
Thanks
I hav'nt direct support from IBM Informix because I have Informix as a service from a supplier. My supplier support is very slow so I want to find a solution by me. Do you now how to reach directly IBM Informix support by mail od phone? Thanks
There's a special option you can use to add a logical log right after the
actual one,
at the time I needed to add 3 or 4 logs with that option before the engine
reacted again.

I tryied ontape -a and ontape -c but logical logs are full so Informix doesn't
respond to me.
Do you now if it's correct to log in on Windows 2003 server with user Informix
and then from the command prompt use Informix commands?
I tryied to use su - informix to run commands from the $ prompt but changes
nothing.
Thanks
What option do you mean? An oprion to set in ONCONFIG or an option of ONPARAMS? Because in my situation I can't use Informix commands I can only act on ONCONFIG file that runs before the FAST RECOVERY MODE. Thanks
Take a look on the "-i" option of onparams command (the onparams command
without this options hangs)
Good luck,

I've called Informix support, the problem is the Informix database consistancy. When Informix restart, it try to recover data from physical and logical log. When Informix was stopped, the long transaction was still active in the logical log so when FAST RECOVERY try to recover data using logical log to trace the transactions, for each transaction Informix populate the log and when a log is full, Informix read the next log checking il that specific log was backuped to physical log; if so Informix clear the log and go on with FAST RECOVERY. When Informix find a backuped log with a BEGIN TRANSACTION, Informix cannot clear the log because otherwise it loose consistancy, so Informix stops working waiting for a checkpoint. In my case the solutions are two: (Excluding restore from backup) SOL1: My Informix version has a bug so I stop Informix, update Informix from the release suggested by support and restart Informix. SOL2: Contatct support and request a remote assistance with external tools to unlock the database loosing database consistancy.
