size in MB written on disk
Posted in 2009
A user asked, vaguely, how to find "the size in MB/KB written on disk" for an Informix instance with 100+ dbspaces/chunks. Suggestions were OS-level tools (iostat, sar, df, SNMP/Cacti) for real I/O throughput, and onstat -D for pages used per dbspace. He then asked whether subtracting the pagwrits counter from onstat -p between two dates would give the figure; Art Kagel said no, since pages can be rewritten many times and the count includes index and overhead pages, and pressed for a precise definition of what was being measured. The thread ends there with no resolution recorded.

Hi,
Your question seems too ambiguous
if you want to know the i/o operations, and throughput of your disk, you can
use iostat command. for example (iostat -x -d)
if you want to know the space free/used on a filesystems df -h command will
help you.
onstat -D command will show you the pages used on every dbspace.

Hi Marc
Is it possible to calculate the size of data written on the disk using
onstat -p
For example :
On 24/01/2009 I run onstat -p and on
pagwrits 114490392
And on 29/01/2009 I run onstat -p and on
pagwrits 205976134
from this values can I calculate the size I want

Hi,
using iostat command will you get realtime data by every disk or volum of
your system. Also you can schedule "sar" command to retrieve disk
statistics and visualize it on a workstation. Also you can get valuable data
about disk activity via snmp with "ucd/net - Device I/O" Cacti plugin.
Cheers,
Marc

Hi
My approach on my example is wrong ?
What I really want is the total size in MB or KB written on the disk since
we have more than 100 DBSpaces and Chunks

Size of what? Also, always post your platform and version information, even when, as here, it seems irrelevant. No. Some pages will have been written multiple times, plus there are index
and overhead pages included in that count. Again, EXACTLY what is it you
want to count? Is it the size of the data added to a table over some time
period? The size of the data in some particular table in total? And when
you say "size on disk" are we including slack space on pages? Index space
taken up by the row or just data space? Overhead pages like bitmaps?
PLEASE be specific.
