Informix termcap - what's up with it?

I am really curious as to why people tend to mess with them....... I have just discovered that's why most of my function keys don't work on my terminal emulator oh yeah, BTW, using AIX and informix 7.3.??? (like I can't even hit the internet and work network at the same time, so I forgot to look it up before I came here - I don't think this is a version specific thing) I am using vt100 and NetTerm, which might be more useful to know in this case. My boss tells me everytime they install a new version of Informix, they have to pull the old hacked up termcap. I tried setting my $TERMCAP to the original termcap (at least it says it's the original), but all the graphics are all fubar. When I asked why our termcap is all f*****d up, I was shown a NeXT machine (which they still keep around because there are some spreadsheets on it - I was trying very hard not to laugh).......it was theorized that this was why it's all fubar, but NeXT didn't even have function keys, and even if it did, why the hell would we want to hold onto some hacked up termcap when we use AIX now? I seem to remember termcap issues similar to this at another place I worked, but why is beyond me..... I tried to use the regular AIX termcap, but it doesn't appear to be installed.....nor are the man pages for termcap, which is why I'm hitting the 'net instead of working right now, just so I can find a damn man page so I can hack up the terminal emulation in NetTerm. Damn! Damn! Damn! sorry, just not happy about this whole thing
I'm not sure what your question is, exactly. Have you tried to use the termcap file included with Informix? It should be in ~informix/etc/termcap. The default OS termcap file should be in (or at least have a link in) /etc/termcap. As far as finding a man page, I don't know, I don't have an AIX box to look at here. However, I can find some termcap info under the man page for curses. Hope this was _some_ help. Understandably, I was kind of in a huff because I was working from home and
having all sorts of problems debugging since my function keys weren't
working, (because NetTerm uses the standard settings for vt100).
My question is, why do people hack Informix's termcap?
There was a copy titled termcap.orig, but when I tried it, the graphical
characters when running 4gl or even dbaccess were all fubar'd making it
impossible to view the screen.
So if that's it, why do they change the function keys AND the escape key?
(what am I asking?, these people used a buggy menu program for at least
5 years before I got there and in an afternoon, I fixed it)
Apparently, someone deleted the AIX termcap (it's not in etc or even var)
and the annoying gits have no man pages for anything more complicated than
grep! (no C man pages, no termcap, no curses, can't even do an apropos )
I did find a decent man page (not for AIX of course, but it did help)
