I don't see any drawback what-so-ever in using raw devices.
Backup? Use informix ontape to backup with the engine running.
When there are no raw device available (Linux, 2.2.*) using the block
devices is faster, anyway. If you have a disk partition > 2GB you should
create more than one chunk, with the offset option.
