Re: Informix to resell 4Js as Informix Dynamic 4GL
Posted in 1998
When I suggested at the last IUWC conference that they should resell the 4J compiler everyone from Informix smiled. It's a good thing that they have done i now. An interesting point is that Linux is one of the supported operating systems :-). So now Informix will have a product that runs on Linux (if they will resell this version). Also this product have implemented many of the features that have been on the IIUG wish list for a long time for 4GL. As to the need to restate the prices they do mention a category of 4gl programs in the press release: "those with thousands of screens and millions of lines of code". May be they can increase the prices? However to reach a significant number of 4GL users they should of course decrease the price. We'll have to wait and see. As to the product itself I find it very interesting, and surely very usefull for many purposes. Another of my warnings is still due though, that this is no real true GUI development environement. You don't write GUI code with a non event driven language. That means if the sole purpose is to create a GUI solution this is a stop gap solution. For that it can be very good, and needed and very usefull for many. For a final GUI product something other is required though. If the GUI feature isn't the major requirement (but perhaps a minor side issue, but still of some importance), but the development of efficient applications is, it may be a tool for a long term strategy. As to the problems with the old fat client type client/server solutions (as embodied by tools like PowerBuilder) their problems are well known. They where allways a bad solution for building complete large applications. Many of those who have tried have failed, some misserably. Even some of the successes have been far from as large as claimed. The world is clearly moving towards multi tiered solutions with mostly relatively thin clients with Java as the major tool to enable this. Tools like the 4J compiler also have a place in this senario. Anyway this warrants a congratulation to Informix and one more move to come back as a tools supplier. Something I think is a good idea.
