I don't want you to go tone deaf. :-) ( You just know I had to respond to this. ) I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a CONTINUED effort on Informix's part to get this DONE. What I fear will happen though is in the daily grind of corporate life this will get put on the back burner, and nothing will get done. So much of what we do depends on the weather, or comets, or biorhythms, or a sinking ship. It is extremely important for Informix to pull their collective heads out, and pay attention to these words: <MEGAPHONE ON> INFORMIX YOUR STOCK IS IN THE DUMPER. YOU HAVE LAWSUITS CRAWLING UP YOUR ASS. ORACLE IS LAUGHING AT YOU IN ADVERTIZING. YOUR IMAGE IS POOP. YOU DON'T NEED A TRADITIONAL DISTRIBUTOR FOR THE LINUX PORT OF 7.X. YOU _ARE_ A DISTRIBUTOR. YOU HAVE CD-ROM BURNERS AND WORD PROCESSING MACHINES AND A SHIPPING DEPARTMENT. YOU HAVE DEVELOPERS AND TECHNICIANS ON STAFF WHO UNDERSTAND KERNELS AND COMPILERS AND UNIX. THIS CALLS FOR UNCOMMON THINKING. YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO GET THIS DONE. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE SOURCE CODE TO LINUX AND DIDDLE WITH THE KERNEL TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT. YOU CAN EVEN PICK A LINUX KERNEL AND COMPILE FOR THAT VERSION. CURRENT SAFE VERSION IS 2.0.29 OR 2.0.30. YOUR CURRENT INSTALL OF 7.X IS A TAR OR CPIO FILE FOLLOWED BY SHELL SCRIPTS. IF YOU DISTRIBUTE YOUR OWN LINUX YOU CAN DO THE SAME AS YOU'VE ALWAYS DONE. IT ISN'T MUCH OF A REACH. CONTACT LINUX PEOPLE--THEY'RE ON THE NET AND NEWSGROUPS AND IN LINUX JOURNALS. INFORMIX TAKE OWNERSHIP. LETS SEE SOME NAMES BEHIND THIS. LETS SEE SOME REAL TIMELINES. STOP COMING UP WITH EXCUSES AND STOP HIDING. YOU MADE YOUR MONEY. BEFORE YOU HEAD TO THE CARIBBEAN OR WHERE-EVER/PARTS-UNKNOWN, DO THE LINUX PORT. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO DO IT THAN TO JUST DO IT. YOU NEED TO THINK INNOVATION. YOU CAN DO IT. SPEND FIVE MINUTES AND PRETEND YOU ARE THE OLD INFORMIX. PRETEND YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING FOR YOUR DEVELOPER COMMUNITY. PRETEND YOU ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND THE MARKET AND CATER TO 90% OF THE MARKET INSTEAD OF ONLY 10%. WAKE UP. THINK. REACH OUT. DO THE RESEARCH. GET INSPIRED! <MEGAPHONE OFF> Hope it wasn't too loud, apparently Informix is hard of hearing. Being from the show-me state, Missouri, I'll believes it when I sees it. Thanks Carlton and IIUG for your efforts. I fear this will never get done. -- Tim Schaefer \\\\|// tschaefe@mindspring.com (6 6) ------------------------oOOo---( )---o00o--------- http://www.mindspring.com/~tschaefe http://www.inxutil.com <-- hey look it's here!
