Smart Blobs Errors - locking issue

We're using 9.14UC7 and we're consistently getting 9810 (Smart blob error) and 113 (file is locked) errors when we have multiple users creating tables with smart large objects at the same time. Specifically we are running scripts that create a table with the default smart blob space and then extract records from the database (from a different smart blob space), create different types of large objects from the original ones and then insert these large objects into a the newly created table. It's during these inserts that we get the errors. I've reported this to Informix Tech support but we are already trying their solution (issuing a "set lock mode to wait 60" command before we do the insert). They also suggested changing from page level locking to row level locking, but I'm not sure how this would help. Is anyone else having this problem? Is this something that goes away in Informix 2000? By the way, we tend to get a lot of other ISAM errors (could not position within table/index) when their is read contention on tables, even when we use dirty read read.
