User installed Informix Developer Edition on a Vista PC and couldn't connect from another machine using Client SDK 3.50, getting error -931. Replies explained -931 means the service name isn't found in the services file, and suggested checking SetNet32/sqlhosts for the port (defaults around 9088), possibly an IPv6 issue requiring a '*' before the hostname. Resolved: the user found the service ol_informix1170 on port 9076 in C:\\Windows\\System32\\Drivers\\Etc\\services, set that port in ILogin Demo, and the connection worked.

Hi everyone,
I installed Informix Developer Edition on my PC (Windows Vista Professional).
Everything is fine on the server.
In another PC on my local network I have installed the Client SDK 3.50, but
all attempts to connect to server have been failed
- I set environment variables INFORMIXDIR and INFORMIXSERVER...
- I downloaded the Firewall...
- I tried to conect using the server name, the IP address... and nothing :(
ILogin Demo shows error -931
How can I get the connection working from the workstation?
... Or is it definitely Developer Edition only accepts local connections
Thanks in advance,
Hernando.
probably IPv6 issue, you can check with 'netstat -na | grep <your port>', if
it's IPv6, then put a '*' before your hostname for your server through
setnet32 like "*myhost", and bounce the server.
With your clientSDK installation you'll find a utility called Find Error.
It shows the -931 is:
Cannot locate servicename service/tcp service in /etc/services.
The service servicename is not listed in the network configuration file
/etc/services (UNIX) or \\\\etc\\\\services (DOS). Check the
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file, and check that the service name for the
desired server is correct. If so, contact your network administrator to find
out why the service is not known. If you are using IBM Informix OnLine for
NetWare, check the \\\\etc\\\\services file on the client for the required
entries.
What are your settings in the ilogin demo? Apparently the port number/name
is not correct. Make sure you use a port number (and that's the correct one)
Regards.

I can't find any services file in the path it is suposed to be, neither a
sqlhosts file.
How can I tell the port number used by the server?
netstat command doesn't tell this information.
Hernando.
Hmmm....
Run SetNet32 on your server. It should have the servicename/port.
If it's a name, find the "services" file in your system (not sure where
Vista keeps it, but traditionally it would be
C:\\\\WINDOWS\\\\System32\\\\drivers\\\\etc\\\\services
If you can't find it, and you did the default installation, the port is
probably 9088 or 9089 (or something very similar). Search for similar ports
in netstat -an.

Yes,
I found the service name ol_informix1170 at port number 9076 (File:
C:\\\\Windows\\\\System32\\\\Drivers\\\\Etc\\\\services), configure ILogin Demo whith this
port and now network connection is working fine.
Thank you very much for your help.
