This and other posts in this thread and my own tests on different versions have shown that there is a series of bugs in the optimiser related to literal (constant) values. And the way it all works has cycled back and forth from release to release. Informix has to make sure that literal values (obviously including things like today, current++) are converted once before the query is executed. Functions with only literal values as parameters must also be evaluated once before query execution. This is realy too obvious to need stating, but as we have seen there are a set of different defects in different versions. It also *seems* like Informix need to go through their function evaluation and data conversion routines. I haven't done enough tests on this, but should such conversions take as much time as they seem to do? Or is there some other defect related to these evaluations? We also realy need to know if Informix has gone through this issue and fixed it in later releases (7.2?). We depend on optimizing for speed (as so many others do). The worst part is that it keeps changing what is fast and not. Nils.Myklebust@ccmail.telemax.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company
